As one of a modest handful of American dubstep producers with releases on prominent overseas labels, it’s fair to say that EshOne has earned the respect of the international community. His releases on Artikal Music UK planted EshOne firmly on the worldwide radar, beginning with 2014’s Petroglyphs EP. Today, EshOne’s music is inescapable. Following a spot on Artikal’s 2014 compilation, EshOne released Monopoly to wild reception. With the doors flung open, one might assume that EshOne is biding his time before the next prolific release. Of course, “big” releases are always a possibility – but for now, the New Mexico- based artist appears to have other plans.
EshOne believes that music should be about art, not prestige or status. This is especially true in underground niche scenes such as dubstep, where artists rarely see significant profits for their work. While EshOne is in a position to chase releases on well-known labels, he prefers to spread his music directly where it’s intended: to the ears of his fans.
EshOne’s most recent release, the nine track Perpetual Motion EP, was released via Bandcamp at the end of February, seemingly spontaneously. The unannounced EP is typical of the artist, who is also known to unleash unexpected free downloads over social media for followers lucky (or attentive) enough to catch the link. The practice is unconventional in a community where many producers build hype around tracks for months – even years – before considering a release. Still, judging by the pervasive presence of EshOne’s tunes on the dance floor, the approach works.
EshOne’s dedication to endowing the underground with audio blessings is furthered by his label, Elk Beats, where he released a limited vinyl pressing of Flight/Ups & Downs VIPs. The self-distribution endeavor is yet another testament to EshOne’s passion-driven DIY ethos, both as an artist and a proponent of America’s underground community.
Given his pure motivations and devotion to maintaining the integrity of music, EshOne is a most fitting addition to Sub.mission’s agency roster. His approach to production and distribution is an uncompromised embodiment of “moving people through sound, not hype”.
