Continuing the lethal doses of Tuesdays this February, Sub.Mission welcomes back the mighty Headhunter to the mile high city. Perhaps better known as Addison Groove in recent years, any fan of dubstep in the early years will know Headhunter for his impressive releases on Tempa. Boasting a legacy of Denver appearances, Headhunter sets from the influential dubstep producer are a rare occurrence nowadays. However, having recently dropped his first Headhunter release in nearly 5 years on the esteemed dubstep blog turned label Trusik, Tuesday night may summon a collection of unheard dubs to complement his legendary Tempa classics.
Finding dubstep back in 2005 at university, Headhunter was no stranger to music with a history in garage, drum and bass, psytrance, etc. Upon discovering the sound, he found a home at Tempa where he would release half a dozen records over the course of 3 years. As the first producer outside London to be signed to the label, he also brought a flowing, techy dnb sort of feel to the label. Considering the progression of dubstep over the years, it’s clear that Headhunters approach to the genre was a massive influence on the sound. Fast forward to 2012 and the scene was overflowing with deep, dark dub-techno grooves. His Tempa back catalog, including the 2008 album Nomad, shamelessly portrays his multi-genre interest. Each track encompasses the mysterious simplicity of dubstep along with the percussion focused hypnotism of techno and flavors from other facets of electronic music.
As dubstep rose in popularity and more aggressive mutations began to take form, he jumped ship and began making more juke-inspired music under the alias Addison Groove. Having the opportunity to tour the world as Addison Groove, it appears the producer is more than happy to revisit the darker sounds of Headhunter with his newfound experience and production tools. His most recent release on Trusik revisits the 2007 vibe but with modern precision and poise. This being my first Headhunter show, I could not be more excited to skank out to some elegant, percy dubstep that journeys through the recently proven ripples of spacetime. Opening up for the rare gem, we have the almighty local Dillard alongside DJ Chris, so be sure to come out early and catch them after the battlers. This is what it’s all about.
