Do you like your dubstep deep, dark, and just a little bit grimy? If so, then check out this interview below with underground producer and DJ Saule. Sub.mission caught up with him to ask about new music in the works, the evolution of dubstep, and his overall .mission.
Gourmet Beats 005 just came out as a split between you and Malleus, and this isn't your first collaborative effort. Are you happy with this tune, and do you have any plans to collaborate with him in the future?
I am so blessed to have a release with Joe Nice and gourmet beats. The amount of respect I have for him and what he has done for the scene is amazing. Tyler (Malleus) and I have been making tunes since about 2011, so no, that was definitely not the first collab with him and I have worked with a handful artists in the past. As for the future I am quite sure there will be another Malleus/Saule tune.
Do you have any other collaborations or upcoming releases in the works?
I have a handful of collabs in the works right with artists that I am extremely excited and blessed to work with. I also have some plans with some forthcoming vinyl releases but can’t say too much more about that.
What other shows and events do you have coming up?
I had a great run of shows this summer and my last event I had planned just ended at Organic Festival and Wormhole last Wednesday with Thelem. I have nothing booked as of now so if any promoters are out there I would love to play in your area.
Dubstep is changing and evolving a lot and going in a lot of new directions, especially newer dubstep from the US - how do you feel about that in relation to your own sound, and what do you think about the overall evolution of dubstep?
I'm thrilled with the dubstep coming out of the US right now and I hope that it continues to grow. Every genre goes through it’s ups and downs and I don’t plan to stop playing a sound I love just because it’s not “cool” or “popular” anymore. I feel that dubstep is just a name for a certain sound and I have projects coming out that will be all over the place BPM wise. Look out for those soon!
Who are some of your biggest influences, and some of the most exciting people you've gotten to collaborate or play with?
Some of my biggest influences as far as artists go are definitely El-B, loefah, Mala, 6Blocc, Kode 9, VIVEK (wiwek). shoutout Rowl and Caski, Blink-182, Third Eye Blind, Goldfinger, John Wayne, Piers Brosman, Goldie (as an actor in Snatch and World is Not Enough), and Jeff just to name a few off the top of my head. The bill I was most excited of being on was when I played with Kaiju, Mala, and Coki at equinox last year, and my most proud collab so far I would say was with Cessman from Deep Medi.
What are some artists, bands, or genres you dig outside of dubstep and bass music? What other kinds of music have you been involved with - do you play any instruments?
Sad to say I honestly love shitty 90s alternative music that I remember listening to growing up but I have always loved metal and hip-hop as well. I could sit here and type out so many bands and artists I remember listening to and still do but it would take up a lot of space. Currently I have been listening to a lot of $uicide Boys, Pouya, GERM, Robb Banks, Ramirez, Fat Nick and Ugly God (shotuout Conyeezus). Growing up, my dad had a studio, so naturally I learned a lot from him and spent many hours playing drums, guitar, and playing with his old Yamaha synths.
What can we expect out of you over the next year, and what are your longer-term plans for the future of your career?
Expect many more tunes over the next year, many of which I will not be posting, so contact that local promoter and get me out there so you can hear them! or keep your ear close to the airwaves. I don’t ever plan to stop making music; it is something that is in my soul and has been a constant in my life. It keeps me sane from the world we live in; I would gladly make music just for myself until I die.
What is your process as far as producing goes - what software or analog hardware do you use, and what is your workflow like for creating songs?
I am a Reason user strictly so it’s all in software stuff. The outboard gear I use is an old Roland Tape echo, space echo, and a dual gate compressor. My workflow is always weird. Sometimes it will take me a month to make a tune and sometimes I can make two tunes in a day. It all depends on my mood really.
Have you played in Denver before? How has your experience been so far?
I have never played in Denver before the last date in July. It was absolutely one of my favorite shows I ever played. You guys are so blessed to have such an amazing crowd and following. Shout out to everyone I met and kicked it with out there; you guys are all family (Love you Dillard).
Sub.mission’s .mission is to move people through sound, not hype. What is your .mission?
My .mission is to have as much fun as possible in life and experience as much as possible, not listen to negativity, and surround myself with my best friends and family. You know that part in the movie Click, the really sad part at the end where he’s in the rain and says “family first”? My family and friends are everything to me and without them I would be nowhere. You all know who you are.
