In the forests outside of Northeast Melbourne, high up in his mountain-top nest, a producer by the name of Spoonbill weaved together a stunning musical odyssey that transcends genres and stifles even the most astute of music taxonomists. The forthcoming album, Mosaic Shuffle, features an emulsion of electronica, bass, beats, and downtempo, all powdered with the Australian songbird’s trademark flavor.
While the full album is set to release on September 8th, fans recently got a preview of the LP with a pair of textured, and multi-layered singles that shine a bright light on Spoonbill’s ever-evolving talent.
The first preview from the LP, “Mirari,” leads with a Tinkerbox-esque intro before dropping into an array of daring horns and fuzzy synthesizers that bob and weave like a pair of toads chasing each other through a creek.
While the track’s depth reveals itself in the brass section, Spoonbill makes it shine with those minimal elements that you hardly notice. The warbled bass stabs and glittering bells left dangling beneath those boastful trumpets are just a few elements that do a lot with a little.
This past week, fans were blessed with the next preview from Mosaic Shuffle, a futuristic vocal number featuring the impassioned chords of The Fret Drifters.
Upon examination of The Fret Drifters' discography, it is easy to see why this collaboration makes so much sense. In “Radio Silent,” the gentle acoustic twang provided by the Oregon band meets the cosmic-laced synthesizers of Spoonbill to create a narrative of a space cowboy roaming the galaxy. It’s an epic and cinematic track through and through and we can’t wait to hear it live.
Fortunately, the wait won’t be much longer as Spoonbill prepares to embark on his first US Tour since Fall 2019 in three short weeks.
Starting things off at Infrasound on 9/16, Spoonbill will then touch down in Portland, Atlanta, Chicago, and several more cities as he brings Mosaic Shuffle and his deep discography of aural wonder to the live stage.
In conversation with Adam Granata of Alchemy Sessions - the host for the Ohio stop - he praises Spoonbill’s performances as a “big psychedelic carnival party” that he can’t wait to bring to Columbus. Tyler Purcell, the co-founder of Headnod Entertainment and host for the Baltimore stop, claims that Spoonbill “offers a level of novelty to a lineup that few artists can provide.”
Wherever he may fan his feathered motifs, you can rest assured that Spoonbill will be providing vibrations from every realm imaginable no matter where he is during this one-month voyage through America.
Keep up with Spoonbill in the links below to make sure you don’t miss any of the climactic dates that await.
