Regardless of your personal preferences when it comes to bass music, the entire month of February at Electronic Tuesdays was completely stacked with talent and offered something for everyone to love and get down to. From the massive 5 Year anniversary party with Youngsta, Hatcha, & Commodo, to the jazzy smooth sound of Swindle, and Headhunter last week… Sub.mission came full equipped all month long! To top-off such a huge month of UK headliners, Hench bossman JAKES came through to close out the month with a bang and delivered a skull crushing performance at Cervantes’ Other Side. If there’s one thing you should know by now, it’s that Sub.mission takes Tuesday nights very seriously and if you haven’t been making it out to the recent installments of Electronic Tuesdays, you’ve been missing out! Check the rewind!
The night began at 8:00pm sharp as local selectors Bonkerz, DJ Stumpy, Gorilliphant, & Dalek One took to the stage to get the night started proper with the weekly DJ battles. Each artist brought their ‘A-Game’ and took full advantage of their 30-minute time slots to showcase their unique sound and prove that they have what it takes to advance to the next round of the competition. Similar to last week’s battle, each DJ brought a fierce competitive edge and proved once again why it is important to show up as soon as the music begins so that you don’t miss a beat! The local bass music scene in Colorado is truly one of the richest and most diverse of any scene in the country and we are reminded of this every Tuesday night in the opening battles.
After a heated battle among the 4, Dalek One emerged as this week’s winner and will square off against ‘Iant’ in the February Winners Showcase battle taking place next week at Electronic Tuesdays. Dalek One’s 100% original performance resonated with the entire crowd and demonstrated that he’s a true force to be reckoned with behind the decks. Be sure to catch Dalek One live in the mix next week as he takes the stage at 9:00pm!

A sea of both new and familiar faces crowded the dance floor as the night progressed and it was now time for the one like Thanom to kick things up a notch and set the tone for a headlining performance from Jakes! No stranger to Electronic Tuesdays, Thanom has thrown down some adrenaline-pumping performances in the past and I couldn’t picture a better supporting talent for this night’s show. ‘Thanom’ is a true household name to those that keep up with the Denver dubstep scene and he’s been making some serious waves with no sign of slowing down. Widely known for his top notch original production and bass heavy tunes, he is definitely one to keep a close eye on. I’ve noticed that Jakes is one of Thanom’s biggest inspirations and on Tuesday night he stepped up to the plate and proved why he was the ideal opener for this special occasion. Equipped with an extensive catalog of his own, original material as well as dubstep bangers like N-Type’s ‘Tolerance’, Thelem’s ‘Bring Me Down’ , Caspa’s ‘Submission’ , and Vivek’s ‘The Big Bang’ , Thanom had the dance floor shaking with low end frequencies and sub bass that rumbled the ground beneath your feet and the night was only midway through.

As the audience grew in numbers and the dance floor was occupied from front-to-back, it was now the time that we had all been waiting for as we welcomed Jakes in his highly anticipated Denver return! From the moment that I discovered that Jakes would be playing a headlining set at Electronic Tuesdays a couple weeks ago, my calendar had been marked with anticipation and this was undoubtedly one of the events that I was looking forward to the most. The first time that I had ever heard of Jakes or seen him perform was at the Sub.mission 4 year anniversary party when I had just moved to Denver and dubstep as a whole was still relatively new to me. To this day I still remember the raw and uncut energy that Jakes brought to the dance floor and at the time I had never experienced anything like it before. His wonky, upbeat bass lines and heart-thumping sound captivated me from the very beginning and his set at the Sub.mission 4 year anniversary is one of the primary reasons why I fell in love with Dubstep. Fast-forward nearly 5 years later and Jakes still stands out as a personal favorite. In an industry that is oversaturated with similar-sounding tunes and producers that are imitating previous styles, Jakes is credited as a true originator and the Bristol-based DJ/Producer/MC/Label Owner has played a pivotal role in the development of underground bass music. To be able to witness such massive performances from some of the most prolific artists in the game week-after-week in the intimacy of Cervantes’ Other Side is a very special treat and we have Sub.mission to thank for it. On Tuesday night Jakes performed an arsenal of his own original material including tunes such as his timeless classics ‘Rock The Bells’, ‘3K Lane’, ‘Somebody Say’, ‘Rhythm’, and many more. Having established himself as a true legend among both the old-school dubstep heads and the younger enthusiasts as well, Jakes attracted a diverse crowd from a multitude of backgrounds and age ranges this past Tuesday night. From the moment he took the stage, Jakes spent zero time messing around and got straight down to business unleashing his signature heavy sound in a ruthless manner and he brought that UK filth to the Mile High City. Toward the final portion of his set Jakes shifted gear and sped up the pace of the night with some Drum & Bass/Jump Up action that had the crowd going off! By the time he had finished his set, my body was consumed with exhaustion as his set had me on my toes from beginning to end and I felt like I had just completed a full on marathon, but better. Who needs cardiovascular exercise when you have the rowdy, rudeboy sound of Jakes to accelerate your heart beat and get your adrenaline pumping?
Check out this video of Jakes amping up the crowd with his tune 'Somebody Say'!

Closing out the night it was now time for Sub.mission resident DJ ‘Subliminal’ to keep the vibe going and send us off in style. Known for his supreme triple-deck mixing abilities and next level track selection, Subliminal performed a healthy balance of UK Grime and 140 tunes to finish off the night strong and keep the late night E-Tuesdays crew busy on the dance floor. Accompanied by the lyrical flow of weekly resident host ‘The X-Tra Stamina Emcee (XTS)’ Sublminal closed out the night in style and wrapped up a massive night at Cervantes’ Other Side! If you like the sound that Subliminal was performing on Tuesday night or if you missed his set and had to leave early, make sure to catch him live in the mix this upcoming Saturday night at Sub.mission’s ‘BASSment Underground’ party at Club Vinyl’s basement as he closed out the night for Doctor Jeep!
