Achieving longevity in the music industry is an immense challenge, especially in the ever-changing continuum of "club music." The realm of club music can be fickle, often driven by fads and anomalies. It takes a talented and determined person to maintain a following while effortlessly releasing new and interesting music. One such character is the storied Londoner Tim Langridge, better known in music circles as Tunnidge. He has an impressive resume of deep and contemplative music with a churning, energetic undercurrent. His first official release was on the legendary DEEP MEDi MUSIK (for whom he illustrates the iconic album art), and he was the first person on the roster for Distance's Chestplate imprint.
Tunnidge continues to impress with his debut album Mobius Strip-, released on Shining Tyger. The album not only demonstrates his versatility as a producer, but his ability to create a completely cohesive 50-minute musical odyssey. The latter is especially significant as electronic music is driven primarily by singles, with LPs often taking a back seat as far as artist priorities (not to say there aren't incredible LPs released every year!). This release is purely engaging from front-to-back. Tunnidge weaves in and out of genres with ease. The ambient introduction of leading track Golden Bough gives way to sparse, traditional 140bpm bass music, with layered vocal samples melting over sharp snare rim-shots. He also flexes his hand with higher tempos, from the bombastic jungle vibes of Amygdala to the relentless 160bpm drum and bass of Hold Tight. The album is punctuated by excellent 140 tunes for the dubstep purists, but features styles outside of the traditional realm as well. Eyes of Fear is a slow, churning, almost techno-influenced track, while Avalon borders on "weightless" territory.
