“Borgore Ruined Dubstep” so reads the t-shirt that Asaf Borger, better known as electronic-music’s enfant terrible Borgore, frequently wears onstage or when he’s behind the decks. One of Bass culture’s most popular and controversial figures lands in the UK this month.
The 24-year-old producer/songwriter/DJ is currently leading the new Rave sound and culture, popular amongst dubstep-loving teens and true bass music aficionados alike. Original tracks and remixes (spanning M.I.A. and Rusko to Britney Spears, LMFAO and Passion Pit) have become cross-genre club smashes; he recently collaborated with Diplo on the track “Animal” taken from Yelawolf’s smash, the Eminem-cosigned debut Radioactive.
His upcoming release Flex – his fifth EP of original material - builds on that notoriety with his hardest, raunchiest grooves yet. Flex shows how Borgore’s music is also progressing more than ever, the new EP features both a pounding dubstep version of the title track along with a more hip-hop flavored version influenced by the “trap music” production of Waka Flocka Flame and Lex Luger, in addition to a monstrous track with Dev titled 'Borgore v Dev. The accompanying video to “Flex” – a hilarious, over-the-top spoof of already absurd rap-video excess, directed by Richard Farmer (winner of an MTV Video Music Award for his work on Gnarls Barkley’s innovative “Run” clip) – completes the package.
A formally-trained jazz musician, Borgore studied at Tel Aviv’s prestigious Thelma Yellin music academy – Israel’s equivalent of Berklee and Julliard, where he learned to write big-band charts and became a virtuoso saxophone prodigy. As a result, his influences aren’t typical: Bach, Wayne Shorter and John Coltrane coexist on Borgore’s iPod alongside Deftones, Aphex Twin, and Louis Armstrong.
Before he became one of the world’s biggest dubstep DJs, he was best known as the drummer for Shabira, the hardcore metal band he co-founded in his hometown of Tel Aviv, after a stint in the Israeli army as a fitness specialist.
“Hearing early UK Dubstep was super life-changing; I loved drum and bass, trance, and hip-hop, and dubstep brought all of that together. It made me feel something I’d never experienced before.”
He started making dubstep-influenced tracks immediately. When he began pairing them with rude, provocative videos on the Internet, they received instant reaction. “I was like an early version of Rebecca Black or Kreayshawn,” Borgore recalls. A social media monster, his early success gave Borgore rare independence for a new artist. Quickly, he started his own label, Buygore, to release his own music and sign other artists.
Sharing bills with the likes of Skrillex, Rusko, and 12th Planet, Borgore came up with the new global scene of producers and DJs that’s transformed dubstep, moving the sound from dank basement clubs to lofty arenas. His debut digital EP Gorestep Vol. 1 appeared in 2009 on Seattle’s influential Shift Recordings. It proved so radically distinct from mainstream dubstep at the time, he considered it his own genre; dubstep with a sense of humour. “It was different,” he explains. “I called it ‘gorestep’; marrying system- shattering electronic dance with provocative, colourful raps.
He has already become a sought-after live show performer; he recently sold out all 1,300 tickets at L.A.’s prestigious Music Box Theater in little over an hour. “Most DJs just sleep behind the decks, checking their email,” Borgore notes. “I try to bring some stage presence: I want to bring something from the live-band culture to the electronic world.”
He showcases his label with UKF, the UK's largest bass music community, via a 2-CD compilation 'Boregore's Misadventures in Dubstep' mixed by Borgore and featuring 6 exclusive tracks from himself and all the artists signed to Buygore records. (Released via UKF on 12 March 2012)
